Summary

My name is Gary。 I’m a thirty-year-old legal assistant with a firm of solicitors in London。 To describe me as anonymous would be unfair but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity。 I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice。

Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan。 When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub。 He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway。 When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex。 But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers。

And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life…

A page-turning story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer。

If you like Bob Mortimer then you’ll love this book, it’s wrote like he writes his comedy and made me chuckle from page one。 Has a great storyline, highly recommend!

Lightweight fluff that would be instantly forgettable had it not been written by Bob。 His surreal turns of phrase save the day and elevate the book from a 3 to a 4。 Sorry, Bob。 Wanted to like it so much more。。。

3。5 StarsI've always enjoyed Bob Mortimer's crazy humour and he seems to be such a nice decent bloke and this all comes across in his first novel in bucket loads。 Very funny – you can picture his voice and silly face when you read it。A cozy crime set in Peckham, South London and Brighton。 Written in first person mainly from Gary's perspective but there are a few chapters in first person from Emily's perspective of her childhood in Brighton which he writes with sensitivity。Very sweet and very fun 3。5 StarsI've always enjoyed Bob Mortimer's crazy humour and he seems to be such a nice decent bloke and this all comes across in his first novel in bucket loads。 Very funny – you can picture his voice and silly face when you read it。A cozy crime set in Peckham, South London and Brighton。 Written in first person mainly from Gary's perspective but there are a few chapters in first person from Emily's perspective of her childhood in Brighton which he writes with sensitivity。Very sweet and very funny。 。。。more

Bob Mortimer is fantastic。 His wit is delightful, his quirky sense of humour has granted him a unique ability to turn even the most mundane topics into something genuinely hilarious, and his comedic timing is unparalleled。 This humour and his kind and generous nature make his first crime novel a true delight。 Anyone that knows his comedy will recognise his innate capacity as a storyteller。 He can uniquely turn a simple trope into a hilarious and entertaining experience。 The book is peppered with Bob Mortimer is fantastic。 His wit is delightful, his quirky sense of humour has granted him a unique ability to turn even the most mundane topics into something genuinely hilarious, and his comedic timing is unparalleled。 This humour and his kind and generous nature make his first crime novel a true delight。 Anyone that knows his comedy will recognise his innate capacity as a storyteller。 He can uniquely turn a simple trope into a hilarious and entertaining experience。 The book is peppered with oddly charming surrealist and absurdist elements, and the story evolves in a captivating style that draws the reader in。 I can't wait to read what comes next。⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 。。。more

I like Bob Mortimer's sense of the bizarre, but this book is not funny enough or well-plotted enough to raise more than an odd smile。 Not for me, I'm afraid。 I like Bob Mortimer's sense of the bizarre, but this book is not funny enough or well-plotted enough to raise more than an odd smile。 Not for me, I'm afraid。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Upon discovering that Bob Mortimer had written a novel I was expecting a laugh out loud comedy。 Instead what I read was an amusing in places crime story。 Throughout the process of reading the novel I continually imagined this as a TV comedy special。The story centre's around Gary, an average bloke in his thirties who is floating through life。 His world is turned upside down when he meets the intriguing Emily and his business associate Brendan is murdered on the same night。Gary is a very likeable Upon discovering that Bob Mortimer had written a novel I was expecting a laugh out loud comedy。 Instead what I read was an amusing in places crime story。 Throughout the process of reading the novel I continually imagined this as a TV comedy special。The story centre's around Gary, an average bloke in his thirties who is floating through life。 His world is turned upside down when he meets the intriguing Emily and his business associate Brendan is murdered on the same night。Gary is a very likeable character who you can't help but root for。 He was a character who I felt a really affiliation with。 He is a bit hopeless and lazy but is a good guy at heart。Gary's neighbour Grace is a straight talking older woman who with her sidekick Lasso looks after Gary and prevents his from getting himself into too much grief。 She shares a love of pies with Gary and her IT skills help Gary in his predicament。Emily is Gary's love interest。 A quirky woman in her early thirties who has never had much control over her own life。 The initial descriptions of her make her seem a little two-dimensional。 She is fleshed out when we hear her narrative at various moments in the second half of the novel。Gary, Grace and Emily make a really odd trio who are forced to tackle a corrupt police force, a computer dongle shaped like a corn cob, an abusive boyfriend and various other obstacles placed in their way。The ending is left a little open as to how life continues for the trio after the pages of the novel but all the loose ends of the narrative are tied up。An enjoyable page turner with plenty of action and some light comedy。 Worth a read。 。。。more

Quirky and whimsical escapism。 It’s not going to win any prizes for plot or character development but if you want something that makes you laugh and feel a little bit warm and fuzzy inside, you’ll enjoy this。

A fun book for a light read but don’t expect fireworks。 The ending was average at best, and you can tell this was a first attempt at a novel。 However it did make me laugh so give it a go。

Listened to the audiobook narrated by Bob and Sally Phillips。 I could listen to either of those people narrate absolutely anything, so it was such a pleasure。 Gets off to a shaky start but then it's a great story。 Listened to the audiobook narrated by Bob and Sally Phillips。 I could listen to either of those people narrate absolutely anything, so it was such a pleasure。 Gets off to a shaky start but then it's a great story。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up to 4。 I’ve been a big Bob Mortimer fan since first seeing him on Vic Reeves Big Night Out back in 1990 and the various TV series and podcasts that he’s been involved with since then have never failed to amuse。 This first novel though, while including trademark comic phrases and off kilter life observations, is tinged with a melancholy similar to the feeling throughout his autobiography。 I could see this being used as the basis of a screenplay for a one off BBC drama/comedy。 His de 3。5 rounded up to 4。 I’ve been a big Bob Mortimer fan since first seeing him on Vic Reeves Big Night Out back in 1990 and the various TV series and podcasts that he’s been involved with since then have never failed to amuse。 This first novel though, while including trademark comic phrases and off kilter life observations, is tinged with a melancholy similar to the feeling throughout his autobiography。 I could see this being used as the basis of a screenplay for a one off BBC drama/comedy。 His delivery of lines is unique and the audiobook version of this would be worth tracking down。Hope there’s more books to come, Bob, maybe including Alsatians and blue drink😂UTB⚽️ 。。。more

I went on such a rollercoaster with this book。 Initially I was really excited to get into it, the narration was unquestionably Bob Mortimer and his way of conveying Gary’s loveable loser personality was quite charming; but after a couple of chapters I grew so deeply bored and uninterested in what seemed like a rather predictable plot that lacked any depth。 However the last third somewhat unexpectedly grabbed me by the heart again and I felt so satisfied with the ending。 The characters are undoub I went on such a rollercoaster with this book。 Initially I was really excited to get into it, the narration was unquestionably Bob Mortimer and his way of conveying Gary’s loveable loser personality was quite charming; but after a couple of chapters I grew so deeply bored and uninterested in what seemed like a rather predictable plot that lacked any depth。 However the last third somewhat unexpectedly grabbed me by the heart again and I felt so satisfied with the ending。 The characters are undoubtedly what makes this book such a success and overall it was a really nice, easy read - nothing spectacular but charming and with a lot of heart and hope。 I suppose like Gary, the ‘shithouse’ himself。 。。。more

Awful and Boring…I was looking forward to reading this book based on the reviews and also that is was Bob Mortimer but I have never struggled so much to read a book。 The writing wasn’t brilliant, the story was unsophisticated, and the general plot was poor。 I continued to the end but took me over a month to read as I just kept putting off having to pick it up, and only completed it because it was our book club pick for February。 The same sort of reviews came out of the book club definitely a dis Awful and Boring…I was looking forward to reading this book based on the reviews and also that is was Bob Mortimer but I have never struggled so much to read a book。 The writing wasn’t brilliant, the story was unsophisticated, and the general plot was poor。 I continued to the end but took me over a month to read as I just kept putting off having to pick it up, and only completed it because it was our book club pick for February。 The same sort of reviews came out of the book club definitely a disappointment I am afraid。 。。。more

It's nothing groundbreaking, though I doubt you'd expect it to be, but it made me laugh a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed it。Loses half a star because the actual mystery side of things is a little flimsy, and another half a star because incidents of my partner calling me a shithouse have quadrupled since she read this book。 It's nothing groundbreaking, though I doubt you'd expect it to be, but it made me laugh a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed it。Loses half a star because the actual mystery side of things is a little flimsy, and another half a star because incidents of my partner calling me a shithouse have quadrupled since she read this book。 。。。more

All I can say is, awesome!I thoroughly enjoyed it every part of it。 The narration and accents where brilliant and really helped with the storytelling。 I listened to the audiobook, but I will definitely be purchasing a printed copy too at some point。 I think I have a new favourite author - Keep the stories coming Bob。

Liked it。。。。。 Good story, great bunch of slightly odd characters, think Gary is probably based on Bob or maybe Bob is based on the squirrel?
